Savannah:
When visiting Atlanta it is also well worth stopping by Savannah which just over 200 miles away. The town was founded by James Oglethorpe in 1733. The town was originally famous for the fact that it was free from lawyers, slavery and bars. It is situated on the Savannah River in the North of Georgia's spectacular coastline. Savannah is a truly beautiful place to visit and its atmosphere is very much akin to that of the Old South. It is unique in the US in that it is laid out around a series of squares. This design has made the city very easy to get around. The city is home to many well preserved nineteenth century buildings, and is home to one of the US's largest preserved historical districts. This district has over 1000 restored Federal and Regency Buildings. There are also a number of Civil War Forts, museums, art galleries and parks throughout the city. Savannah is home to John Berendt's best selling novel "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" and Forest Gump's famous park bench is located in the middle of Chippewa Square in the Historic District.
